Automatic Incident Detection Focused on Stopped Vehicles

Automatic incident detection (AID), also called automated incident detection, uses video analytics to find dangerous situations on the road without an operator having to watch every camera. Among all incidents, a stopped vehicle on a highway, expressway or in a tunnel is one of the most dangerous: a broken-down car or truck standing in a live lane creates a serious risk of secondary collisions.

Our software is a specialised AID component focused on exactly this task – automatic detection of stopped vehicles from your existing traffic cameras. Unlike inductive loops, which only see the spot where they are installed, video covers the whole camera view. It runs alongside your traffic control centre and alerts your operators so they can close a lane, inform drivers or send help.

Why Focus on Stopped Vehicles

  • The most critical incident type: a stationary vehicle in a running lane or on the hard shoulder is a frequent cause of rear-end and chain-reaction collisions.
  • Hard to spot manually: in a control room with dozens of camera views, a single stopped vehicle in the distance, at night or behind a road sign is easy to miss.
  • Fewer false alarms: a dedicated model trained per camera lets us tune detection to each view. We aim to keep false alarms to a maximum of 2 per hour per camera.

How Our Video Incident Detection System Works

  1. The software connects to the existing video stream of your IP or analog (CCTV) cameras – no new hardware is needed.
  2. Artificial intelligence continuously analyses the video and recognises vehicles that stop where they should not.
  3. We train a separate model for each camera, with separate training for day and night footage.
  4. When a stopped vehicle is detected, the system alerts the operator, who verifies the situation and decides on the response.

Incident Detection Software for Your Traffic Control Centre

Many road operators already run a traffic management platform or an AID system based on inductive loops or radar. Our incident detection software can complement it with video. Our stopped vehicle detection can work as an additional detection layer and send its alerts to your control centre, messaging platform or other systems. Detection is controlled through a web-based control panel and we adapt the integration to your workflows.

In Operation on Expressways

Our stopped vehicle detection is in operation on expressways in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where it monitors traffic cameras of road operators around the clock. The same approach can be used on motorways, in tunnels, on bridges and on urban roads.
